Comprehensive and Gentle Dentistry Under One Roof

Pediatric Dental Care at Sycamore Dentistree
The habits and feelings a child develops about dental care in their early years tend to stay with them for life. We make it our goal to ensure every child leaves our office feeling good about their visit — so that going to the dentist never becomes something they avoid as adults.
Services We Provide for Children
We offer comprehensive dental care for kids from their very first tooth through their teenage years. Dr. Tolzin grew up right here in Sycamore and has a particular passion for family-centered, pediatric-friendly care.
- First Visits & Early Exams We recommend a child's first visit around their first birthday or when their first tooth appears.
- Cleanings & Fluoride Treatments Gentle preventive care to keep developing teeth strong and cavity-free.
- Dental Sealants Protective coatings for back teeth as permanent molars come in — one of the best cavity-prevention tools for kids.
- X-Rays & Monitoring We track tooth development and watch for alignment issues early.
A Practice That Feels Like Home
We are a hometown dental office — not a pediatric specialty chain. Your child will see the same familiar faces at every visit, and our team takes the time to explain things in ways that make kids feel informed and comfortable, not anxious.
When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit by age one. Early visits let us check development, answer parent questions, and start building a positive relationship with your child long before any serious dental needs arise.

Pediatric Dentistry FAQ
- When should my child have their first dental visit?
- We recommend bringing your child in around their first birthday or when their first tooth comes in — whichever comes first. Early visits set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits.
- How do you help kids who are nervous about the dentist?
- We go slow, explain everything in simple terms, and let kids get comfortable at their own pace. Our team is experienced with anxious children and genuinely enjoys helping them feel at ease.
- How often should my child come in for cleanings?
- Every six months is standard for most children. If your child is at higher risk for cavities, we may recommend more frequent visits.
- Are X-rays safe for kids?
- Yes. We use digital X-rays that emit very low radiation. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary and always use protective shields.
- At what age should kids start flossing?
- As soon as two teeth touch each other, they should be flossed. For young children, parents should help with flossing until kids develop the dexterity to do it themselves — usually around age 8 or so.
- What if my child knocks out a baby tooth?
- Call us right away. Baby teeth typically do not need to be replanted, but we want to check for injury to the gum and make sure the permanent tooth underneath is not affected.
- Does my child need dental sealants?
- Sealants are highly recommended for children as their back molars come in. They provide a protective coating that significantly reduces the risk of cavities in those deep grooves.
- How can I help my child brush their teeth properly?
- Use a small, soft-bristled brush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Children need help or supervision with brushing until around age 7 or 8. We are happy to demonstrate technique at any visit.
- What do I do if my child has a toothache?
- Call our office and we will get them in as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can give age-appropriate pain relief and apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek if there is swelling.
- Do you see teenagers too?
- Absolutely. We provide dental care for patients of all ages, from babies through adults. Teenagers especially benefit from orthodontic monitoring, sealants, and guidance on habits like diet and hygiene.
