Retainers in Sycamore, IL
Protect your straight smile for the long haul with a custom retainer from Sycamore Dentistree.
Finishing orthodontic treatment is a big deal — but it is only half the battle. Teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions, and without a retainer, those results can gradually fade. At Sycamore Dentistree in Sycamore, IL, we fit custom retainers to keep your smile exactly where it should be.

Retainers at Sycamore Dentistree
After orthodontic treatment — whether braces or clear aligners — the bone and tissue around your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions. A retainer holds everything in place during this critical period and continues to protect your results long after. Skipping retention is one of the most common and preventable causes of relapse after orthodontic treatment.
Types of Retainers We Offer
We fit patients with the retainer type that best suits their treatment, lifestyle, and long-term retention needs.
- Removable Clear Retainers Custom-made from clear plastic, these fit snugly over your teeth and are worn at night. Nearly invisible and easy to clean.
- Hawley Retainers A classic wire-and-acrylic retainer that is durable and adjustable. A good option when some minor tooth movement is still being managed.
- Fixed (Bonded) Retainers A thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth that provides continuous, passive retention without any effort from the patient.
How Long Do I Need to Wear My Retainer?
The short answer: indefinitely, at least at night. In the first year after treatment, we typically recommend nightly wear. Over time, many patients can reduce to a few nights per week. But teeth never stop having the potential to shift, so some level of retention for life is always the recommendation.
Lost or Worn-Out Retainer?
If your retainer is lost, cracked, or no longer fits well, do not wait. The longer you go without it, the more your teeth may shift. Call us and we will take new impressions and get you a replacement as quickly as possible.
Retainer Replacement
Retainers wear out, get lost, or break — it happens more often than you might expect. If your retainer no longer fits snugly or has been sitting unused in a drawer, do not wait to address it. Teeth shift faster than most people realize, and a loose or outdated retainer means your smile is moving. At Sycamore Dentistree, we can fabricate a new custom retainer quickly, whether you need a traditional wire Hawley retainer or a clear Essix-style replacement. If noticeable shifting has already occurred since your last retainer, we will evaluate your options honestly and let you know the best path forward — which may include a short course of clear aligner treatment to get things back on track before relining.

Retainers FAQ
- How long do I need to wear my retainer?
- We recommend nightly wear indefinitely. In the first year after orthodontic treatment, consistent nightly use is critical. Over time, some patients can reduce to a few nights per week, but some form of ongoing retention is always recommended.
- What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?
- Teeth will gradually shift back toward their original positions. How quickly depends on the individual, but relapse is common and can undo years of orthodontic work. Wearing your retainer consistently is the simplest way to protect your results.
- My retainer does not fit anymore — what do I do?
- Call us right away. A retainer that no longer fits means your teeth have shifted. Do not force it. We will take new impressions and fit you with a replacement. The sooner you come in, the less shifting has likely occurred.
- How do I clean my retainer?
- Rinse it with cool water after removing it. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic. Retainer cleaning tablets or solutions can also be used for a deeper clean.
- How long does a retainer last?
- Clear plastic retainers typically last 1 to 3 years with regular use. Hawley retainers last longer — often 5 to 10 years. Fixed retainers can last many years but need to be checked at every visit. We will let you know when replacement is needed.
- Can I get a retainer if I never had braces?
- Yes. Some patients use retainers to prevent minor shifting from occurring even without a history of orthodontic treatment. Others need retainers after losing space maintainers or other appliances.
- What is the difference between a removable and fixed retainer?
- A removable retainer is worn at night and taken out during the day. A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth that works passively around the clock. Each has advantages, and some patients use both.
- My child just finished braces — when should they start wearing their retainer?
- Immediately. The night orthodontic treatment is complete, the retainer should be worn. We fit retainers at the same appointment braces are removed or aligners are completed.
- Does wearing a retainer hurt?
- A new retainer may feel snug or slightly uncomfortable for the first night or two. This is normal. If it causes significant pain or leaves marks, let us know and we will check the fit.
- I lost my retainer from years ago — can I still get a replacement?
- Yes. We take new impressions and fit you with a current retainer. If your teeth have shifted since your last retainer, we discuss what options are available to address any changes.
