Comprehensive and Gentle Dentistry Under One Roof
Dental Exams & X-Rays at Sycamore Dentistree
Most dental problems — cavities, gum disease, bone loss, even oral cancer — do not cause obvious pain until they have progressed significantly. Regular dental exams paired with diagnostic X-rays allow us to catch issues when they are small, affordable to treat, and easiest to fix. At Sycamore Dentistree, we recommend an exam and X-rays at least once a year for most patients, and every six months for those at higher risk. Dr. Neglia and Dr. Tolzin take their time with each exam — you will never feel rushed.
What Happens During Your Exam
Your exam is a comprehensive look at your entire oral health, not just your teeth. We check every surface of each tooth, evaluate your gum health, screen for oral cancer, examine your bite and jaw function, and review any areas that have changed since your last visit. If you have concerns or questions about anything going on in your mouth, this is the time to bring them up.
- Full tooth-by-tooth check We examine all surfaces for decay, cracks, chips, and wear.
- Gum and bone evaluation Probing depths and bone levels tell us if gum disease is present or developing.
- Oral cancer screening A quick visual and tactile check of the soft tissues inside your mouth.
- Bite and jaw assessment We check for signs of grinding, clenching, or TMJ issues.
- Digital X-rays Low-radiation images reveal what we cannot see with the naked eye — decay between teeth, bone levels, root health.
Honest Findings, Clear Plans
After your exam, we sit down with you and explain everything we found in plain language. If treatment is needed, we walk you through your options — including doing nothing if that is a reasonable choice — and we give you a clear picture of costs before anything is scheduled. No surprises, no pressure. Just honest guidance from people who genuinely care about your health.
Why Digital X-Rays Matter
Our digital X-ray system gives us clear, detailed images instantly — no waiting for film to develop, no extra exposure time. We can zoom in, adjust contrast, and show you exactly what we are seeing on the screen right in front of you. Bitewing X-rays check for cavities between teeth, periapical views show the full root structure, and panoramic X-rays give us the big picture of your entire jaw and all your teeth at once.

Dental Exam & X-Rays FAQ
- How often do I need a dental exam?
- Most patients benefit from a dental exam and cleaning every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, high cavity risk, or certain medical conditions may need more frequent visits — we will recommend a schedule that makes sense for your specific situation.
- Are dental X-rays safe?
- Yes. Modern digital X-rays use extremely low levels of radiation — up to 90% less than traditional film X-rays. The exposure from a full set of dental X-rays is comparable to what you receive from a short airplane flight. We also use a lead apron and thyroid collar to minimize any exposure further.
- How often do I need X-rays?
- For most patients, bitewing X-rays every 12 to 18 months are sufficient to monitor for cavities and bone changes. A full set of X-rays is typically taken every three to five years. Patients with active decay, gum disease, or dental restorations may need more frequent imaging.
- What does the dentist look for during an exam?
- We check every tooth for decay, cracks, and wear; evaluate your gum health and bone levels; screen for oral cancer; assess your bite and jaw function; and review any existing dental work like fillings and crowns for signs of failure or leakage.
- Does the exam hurt?
- A standard dental exam should not cause pain. Gum probing may feel slightly uncomfortable if your gums are inflamed, but most patients find the process easy. If you are anxious about your appointment, let us know — we are happy to talk through what to expect and make you as comfortable as possible.
- What is an oral cancer screening?
- We visually and manually check the soft tissues inside your mouth — lips, tongue, cheeks, roof and floor of mouth, and throat — for any unusual changes in color, texture, or shape. Oral cancer caught early is highly treatable. The screening takes about two minutes and is painless.
- What if the dentist finds a cavity?
- We will show you the X-ray and explain the cavity, its size and location, and your treatment options. Small cavities can be filled at a follow-up visit. We never push unnecessary treatment — if something can reasonably be monitored rather than immediately treated, we will say so.
- Do children need dental exams too?
- Absolutely. We recommend children have their first dental visit by age one or when their first tooth appears, and then regular exams every six months after that. Early exams help us monitor development, apply preventive treatments like fluoride and sealants, and get kids comfortable with dental visits before any problems arise.
- Can I just get X-rays without an exam?
- X-rays are a diagnostic tool used to support a clinical evaluation — they are most useful when combined with a hands-on exam. In most cases, we recommend having both at the same visit for the most complete picture of your oral health.
- What if I have dental anxiety?
- You are not alone — dental anxiety is very common. Tell us when you call or at the start of your appointment. We can walk you through every step, work at your pace, and discuss sedation options if needed. Our goal is for you to leave feeling cared for, not stressed out.
